Nobel Peace Laureate Project

Honoring and Inspiring Peacemakers

About Us

The Nobel Peace Laureate Project (NPLP) is a grassroots organization in Eugene, Oregon, founded by John Attig.  The organization was created to promote peace and the role of peacemakers in the world.

Our Mission

The mission of the Nobel Peace Laureate Project (NPLP) is to honor those Americans who have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and to inspire future peacemakers.

Honoring Peacemakers

The Nobel Peace Park is the first and only park in the U.S. to honor the American recipients of the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize – 21 individuals and 3 organizations. These laureates have prevented and ended wars, saving millions of lives and billions of dollars. The Nobel Peace Park offers a peaceful setting to learn more about their remarkable accomplishments.

Inspiring Peacemakers

NPLP seeks to educate and inspire future peacemakers by promoting the importance of peace and peaceful relations around the world.  The organization promotes peace through its community events and its educational outreach program which includes lesson plans developed for classroom instruction.  Profiles on each of the American Peace Laureates and recommended classroom activities for middle and high school can be downloaded at no cost.

Our History

John Attig, founder of the organization, was a high school history and social studies teacher prior to moving to Eugene.  His interest in history continued with a determination to increase the public’s awareness of our peacemakers.  John often lamented that “the average person can name about five American generals, but it’s rare to find someone who can name five American peace prize winners.”  That lack of awareness and the fact that there weren’t any U.S. monuments that honored our peacemakers inspired him to create the Nobel Peace Park.

The Nobel Peace Park was finally completed in 2013 and is the first and only park in the nation to honor the American Nobel Peace Laureates – 21 individuals and 3 organizations.

John Attig and Claes Nobel of the Swedish Nobel Family served as Co-Chairs of the Nobel Peace Laureate Project for many years.  (In memoriam.)
