1947 — American Friends Service Committee

The award was shared with the Friends Service Council of the United Kingdom. Their motto is “It is better to suffer injustice than to commit injustice.” Founded in 1917, it is often considered to be the very first contemporary peace organization. In both world wars it was active in relief efforts, making no distinction between friend and foe.

“The spirit alone gives victory.”
