1912 — Elihu Root, Diplomat and former U. S. Secretary of State

Root tried hard to increase understanding between the United States and Latin America. He was one of the founders of the Pan American Bureau (1908) which later became the Pan American Union. He sponsored the Central American Conference of 1907 and negotiated 22 international arbitration treaties to peacefully settle disputes among nations.
