Started in the United States at the height of the Cold War, by 1985, it included over 150,000 physicians from over 40 nations, including the former Soviet Union. Its moral base is the commitment of doctors to protect life and preserve health. The organization works to educate the world about the dangerous consequences of nuclear war.
